Iquique - Iquique City Tour
Enjoy a leisurely excursion through this lovely, adventurous yet cosmopolitan, 19th century city known once as the world's nitrate capital.
- Explore this cosmopolitan seaside city and learn its history
- Admire colourful and historic architecture
- Taste the local cocktail, Pisco Sour, or enjoy a refreshing juice
- Visit regional museums and the Centro Español
We begin our excursion by exploring the historic centre of Inquique’s main avenues, including the seaside southern section with sandy beaches. Walk along Baquedano Avenue with its brightly painted Georgian-style wood houses built between 1880 and 1920 to emulate the then current North American fashion.
Visit Astoreca Palace, an imposing mansion from 1904 that was the home of a nitrate baron. Today, it is the city's culture centre. Afterwards, stroll downtown to Plaza Prat on Baquedano Boulevard, which still boasts exotic palm trees and other plants brought to the city by wealthy "iquiqueños".
Iquique’s legacy of luxury lives on in other establishments that we visit during the tour. These include a carefully preserved clock tower built in 1877; the city’s most precious jewel, the regional museum with archaeological and ethnographic exhibits; and the Centro Español, erected in Moorish style in 1904, where you can sip a Pisco Sour or fruit juice. Enjoy some leisure time walking around the main plaza before we drive back to the pier.
