Cancelling the upcoming Antarctica season

A message from our CEO.

As we have reached October, we have also reached the important juncture for deciding how to operate our much anticipated Antarctica season.

Over the past months, the entire Hurtigruten team has been working tirelessly to adapt our operations to the very challenging environment the global pandemic is causing for the entire travel industry.

International travel restrictions and port closures are changing rapidly, often from day to day. There is currently a ban of cruise ship operations in many waters, and most flights to our departure ports in Argentina and Chile are cancelled.

The situation is still fluid, and developments are unpredictable. There are still major hurdles to overcome. As of now, they do not show much promise to be resolved in time to explore Antarctica under our strict health and safety standards in the coming months.

This is why we have made the decision that Hurtigruten will not operate our Antarctica expedition cruises departing in October, November and December 2020, or in January, February and March 2021.

The health and safety of our guests, crew and staff is Hurtigruten’s number one priority. Given the widespread consequences this has for your long-awaited expedition cruise, for our crew and staff, our partners, and the local communities we have been working with for decades, this has not been an easy decision to make. But to us, it is the only responsible one.

This is a temporary setback. We will explore again. With this in mind, we would like to remind all guests booked for the Antarctica 20/21 Antarctica season with our highly flexible rebooking policy, that you may postpone your planned expedition and rebook your voyage to a similar cruise in the 21/22 season.

New start – Safer Together

As of now, Hurtigruten plans to restart our expedition cruises with even stricter Covid-19 measures in place. This will include testing for all guests. Please see further details on our Safer Together health protocols, which will be updated as soon as more details are ready.

As one of our highly valued explorers, we thank you for your continued support and trust. We look forward to welcoming you on board one of our ships for the 2021-2022 Antarctica season – or another Hurtigruten expedition cruise in the near future.

Rest assured - #WeWillExploreAgain

Sincerely,

Daniel Skjeldam
CEO, Hurtigruten
