Learn about life in the Viking Age. Through several archaeological excavations, we have a lot of information about the Vikings and their life in our region.   

You will first have an exciting experience in our Viking House. Here you will take part in the big and very important Viking battle that took place in the year 872 where then Norway was united into one kingdom. Take on your VR glasses and follow King Harald Fairhair during the battle. The next stop will be to see where the battle actually took place. The majestic monument “Swords in Rock” came up in 1983 to commemorate the battle. The biggest sword is for Harald Fairhair.   

After all this fighting you will visit a farm to see how the Vikings lived and how their daily life was. We are going to the Iron Age Farm at Ullandhaug. The Iron Age Farm is rebuilt on the original remains and ruins of an important farm that dates back to the migration period (350-550 AD) and is the only one of its kind in Norway. You may then ask what this has to do with the Viking Age as that come later: There are a lot of similarities between these two periods, and there are traces left by the Vikings here at the farm as they used the area around the farm in their time too. Imagine going back in time to experience how life was. When the fire burned in the fireplace, children were running around in the houses and the adults would do things like hunting or grinding to make sure there was food on the table. Would you like to try? Enter the longhouse with the Lady of the farm or the tribal chief and get a glimpse into prehistoric Rogaland. Experience how people lived, what they ate and how they sustained life. While sitting around the firepit the Lady of the house serves carefully selected and locally produced Iron Age tastings together with mead – the beverage of the Gods.
