The fishing community of Kalvåg is situated far out to sea, with the Cape of Stadt as its neighbour in the north and the open North Sea to the west. In the 1860’s thousands of people worked in the town’s large

herring fisheries. Today approximately 500 people live in what is undoubtedly the most beautiful and best preserved fishing village in Western Norway. Around the bay sea houses are clustered together retaining much of the old town atmosphere. You can visit the old herring salt houses. The Liset Salting House formerly housed a coppersmith’s, a carpenter’s shop, salt herring and cod liver oil production, and a base for

the fishery. Today the tools and equipment lying about create an authentic impression that the workers in the early post-war years are simply absent for a five minute break.
