Established in 1789, Hammerfest is the northernmost town in the world. Upon arrival, the bus will take you to the Museum of Reconstruction for Finnmark and Northern Troms. The museum hosts an impressive exhibition about World War II in Northern Norway and the massive efforts necessary to rebuild the region.
The Meridian Column, Hammerfest’s UNESCO World Heritage site, is our next stop. The monument commemorates the first official measurement of the exact size and shape of the Earth. From here, we also have a spectacular view of the LNG refinery on Melkøya, the processing site for the natural gas field of Snøhvit.
The town of Hammerfest has a long, eventful history; back in 1891, it was the first town in northern Europe to get electric street lighting purely run on hydropower. As we head up Mount Salen, you will learn more about Hammerfest’s unique history. From Salen you will enjoy great views over the town and our waiting ship.
