Embark on a journey of enlightenment and visit the eco-conscious fishing village of Suðureyri. We stop at various intervals to sample the sumptuous tastes of local produce during an in-depth guided tour.
Be prepared for some cultural surprises, like the local businessman who has been made an honorary chief in an African village, thanks to his dedicated efforts researching alternative uses for fish waste. Even the local fishing boats get in on the eco act. Suðureyri is now principally a base for speed-boat fishermen who sail quickly out to sea and return to land with fresh, high-quality catches. The speed and efficiency of the entire operation is such that their catch is on sale in Europe a mere 36 hours later. The local fishermen strive to practice sustainable, environmentally friendly fishing in complete harmony with nature. They know that this ensures their own future as well as that of their children.
Suðureyri is also the only community in the area that gets a supply of geothermal water that provides enough hot water to heat all the buildings in the village and the outdoor swimming pool (the only one of its kind in the area). A nearby hydroelectric power station supplies residents with renewable electricity.
This is an authentic, once-in-a-lifetime inter-cultural experience that you are not likely to forget…
