We begin with a short bus drive to Thorarinsstadir, where there is a short stop to explore the abandoned farm.

We then continue the tour, making our way through grassy dells surrounded by tall mountains. Our destination is Skálanes and along the way we cross three rivers, experience Icelandic nature and encounter wildlife. We also see the ruins of farms, once the heart and soul of the area a long time ago.

Skálanes is a private nature and heritage centre within a 1,250-hectare/12.5 km2 nature reserve. The vision here is to create a place where Iceland´s natural environment and cultural history are researched and interpreted while simultaneously serving as a model for sustainable tourism. Findings from the surveys and research work at Skálanes are used to educate interested parties and shared with other research projects in Iceland and beyond.

Another exciting element of this tour is that we may spot whales and seals if we are lucky.

Before heading back by bus we enjoy traditional Icelandic refreshments made on site. This is a unique opportunity to visit one of Iceland’s most remote places that only a few Icelanders have ever seen.
