A kaffemik is a Greenlandic tradition for special occasions like births and birthdays, first days of school and confirmations. Instead of going out on occasions like this, Greenlanders celebrate at home. The party is usually prepared days in advance, and the table set with fine china and decorative table linens. With old friends, family from out of town, and brand new friends gathered together, walking into a kaffemik might feel like a mix of a small reunion and the first day of school.
The host offers a huge selection of dishes at a kaffemilk, ranging from homemade cakes and sweets to complete meals of reindeer, seal, whale and muskox meat, fish soup and other specialties. You also always find a fresh pot of coffee. As a guest you take part in an authentic experience and learn more about what it’s like to live like a Greenlander.
