Cacao Farm & Indigenous Community
Get a taste of life in a Ngabe village, learn about organic cacao and enjoy a delicious chocolate tasting as you support the local community.
The Oreba Chocolate Tour in Bocas del Toro not only highlights cacao cultivation and chocolate production, which is quickly becoming one of Panama's most coveted exports, but also lets visitors experience life in an indigenous Ngabe community. With its lush greenery and native chocolate making demonstrations, this tour is one of our most popular excursions.
The tour is completely run and managed by the indigenous Ngabe farmers in the community. This adventure takes travellers on a fascinating tour of the entire process of obtaining organic shade-grown cacao, explaining every step of the way including growing, harvesting, fermenting, drying and ultimately roasting and making chocolate. We will scan for poison dart frogs, sloths, and toucans along the way. Dark chocolate, nibs, roasted cacao, or the 100% pure chocolate used for baking and making hot chocolate, as well as artisan crafts made by the indigenous people of the community are available for purchase. (Cash only) 100% of the proceeds go the community - much directed towards education and health care. So, join us to indulge in delicious chocolate and support the local indigenous community at the same time. Please note that some areas of transit may be considered dirty.
