Castle Espie is one of 10 UK visitor sites managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, a conservation charity that protects and restores important and threatened wetland habitat across the globe. Nestled on the shores of Strangford Lough in Do. Down, Northern Ireland, this 60 acre kingdom of wildlife is home to Ireland’s largest collection of native and exotic water birds, bats and migrant birds and the only centre of its kind in Northern Ireland, offering people of all ages the opportunity to get closer to nature and to learn about some of the world’s most threatened wildfowl species.
Take time to explore the woodlands and shore-view walks and see what wildlife you can spot from the collection of bird hides dotted around the reserve. Explore the Sustainability Trail which has a key focus on ecological design to create buildings that work in harmony with the natural environment around them. The onsite visitor centre and Limekiln Observatory are great examples of this where nature has helped inspire their shape, the materials they are made from and the way they function. The trail takes guests from the visitor centre around the wetland treatment system and through to the Crannog, Limekiln Observatory, composting toilet, finishing by the wetland treatment system. Inside the Visitor Centre boasts a gallery of Ireland’s only environmental art-space, hosting many artists, sculptors, craftspeople and photographers’ work - experiencing nature through art which guests can discover during their visit.
Return to port with a brief panoramic of Belfast City enroute.
Remarks/requirements: We recommend that guests wear warm, layered, waterproof clothing and comfortable non-slip walking shoes.
