After a short, narrated transfer aboard a private 12-passenger van, you’ll enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the Sitka Sound Science Center. Opportunities at the historic facility include an opportunity to touch sea urchins and anemones at the aquarium, go eye-to-eye with a wolf eel, and view fish species and invertebrates found in the depths of Sitka Sound. You’ll also have exclusive access to areas not open to the general public. This includes a more personal viewing of one of the aquariums most popular residents, a Giant Pacific Octopus, and a close-up look at the center’s state-of-the art marine research and Pacific salmon rearing facility.

After, you’ll board the van for transport to Allen Marine’s private dock and shipyard, where you’ll board a 12-passenger expedition vessel that was built by our Alaska Native-owned company. As the captain navigates the craft into Sitka Sound you’ll be served a bowl of locally made hot clam chowder. Local delicacies such as smoked salmon spread with crackers, kelp salsa and more will also be served alongside chilled beverages, coffee, tea, or hot cocoa.

As you ply the waters of Sitka Sound your Scientific Expedition Leader will highlight points of interest and wildlife. The area is home to an abundance of animal species, such as sea otters, sea lions, harbor seals, eagles, and humpback whales. After selecting a stretch of pristine shoreline perfect for the weather conditions of the day the captain will land the vessel for beach exploration. You’ll savor unhurried beachcombing and intertidal zone discoveries while enjoying the fresh Alaska air and stunning scenery.
