The itinerary

Hurtigruten offers unique expedition cruises to some of the most remote and pristine waters of the world. As with all expeditions; nature prevails. Weather, ice and sea conditions set the final framework for all Hurtigruten’s operations. Safety and unparalleled guest experiences are at all times our top priorities. All our indicative itineraries are continuously evaluated for adaptions, whether this is due to constraints the elements unexpectedly present – or exciting possibilities nature and wildlife offer. That is why we call it an expedition.

Departure 03 January 2021

Departs from Tromsø, Norway

A Northern Adventure

This Norway cruise from Tromsø to Bergen visits inviting cities, towns and villages in beautiful natural surroundings. Bring an adventurous spirit and your warmest winter clothing to fully enjoy the Arctic outdoors and hope to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

This is the far north, so the weather may be clear, or snowing heavily with strong winds. We are natives here and know how to work with the conditions to adapt our programmes as we go, with safety first and foremost.

Wild and Rugged Beauty

Northern Norway is wild, rugged and like nowhere else on Earth. The Norwegian fjords are continuously varied, unspoiled, magnificent, awe-inspiring, beautiful…you will run out of adjectives to describe this unforgettable place.

The settlements and villages we visit on this Norwegian fjord and coastal cruise are rich with fishing traditions, Sami history, polar expedition heritage and important World War II sites. They also offer a vast range of options for winter activities. We are hoping for crisp and clear nights and days so that, as evening falls, we can hunt for Northern Lights from the deck.

Across the Arctic Circle

As we leave the north behind and head south, we cross the Arctic Circle and visit the inviting cities of Trondheim and Ålesund, where you can enjoy great architecture and a range of excursion options. The voyage ends in Bergen.

Day 1: Tromsø

The Gateway to the Arctic

Tromsø brims with culture and history in a magnificent landscape.  The city is often described as the Paris of the North, and boasts friendly locals, wonderful shopping and great restaurants. We recommend that you spend some time to enjoy this Arctic town before embarking MS Spitsbergen.

Day 2: Alta

Winter Adventures

Half day

We will be spending the day in Alta, our northernmost call on this voyage. Alta is a small town with plenty of winter activities on offer. Join in on optional excursions to learn about Sami Culture or go snowmobiling or dogsledding.

Day 3: Narvik

Beautiful Setting

Half day

Scenic Narvik is surrounded by mountains - a truly beautiful setting. Join in on some winter fun or take the cable car to the summit of Fagernesfjellet, which on clear days offers impressive views of the fjord below.

Day 4: Svolvær

Heart of Lofoten

Full day

In the heart of Lofoten, the picturesque town of Svolvær is a fishing village where age-old seagoing traditions are still being practiced. We will make the most of the Arctic daylight, enjoying the winter scenery.

Day 5: Reine

A True Gem of Lofoten

Half day

We spend the morning in Reine, a true gem of Lofoten, this is the iconic image of a Norwegian fishing village. Reine´s beauty has inspired artists since the 1880´s. Red and white traditional fisherman’s cottages - known as Rorbuer - perch on stilts over the water’s edge.

Day 6: Trondheim

The Viking City

Half day

Trondheim was founded by the Viking king Olav Tryggvason in 997. It has a rich cultural life and is said to have the most restaurants per person in Norway. There is plenty to take in as you wander through this historic city, with surroundings that create a beautiful, almost mystical atmosphere.

Day 7: Ålesund

Beautiful Art Nouveau

Full day

Ålesund is an Art Nouveau town which seems to have been taken right out of a fairy tale.  After a disastrous fire, the majority of Ålesund was rebuilt in 1904 in spectacular Art Nouveau style.  Visit the Art Nouveau Centre, or If conditions allow, walk up the 418 steps to the Aksla Mountains viewpoint.

Day 8: Bergen

End of the Voyage

Norway has many beautiful cities and Bergen most certainly rates highly amongst them. We recommend you spend some time enjoying the city after disembarking. Enjoy a walk along the harbour area, fronted by wooden houses dating back as far as the 1300’s and visit Mount Fløyen for great views.
