Entry requirements

All guests checking in at The Coastal Express terminal or onboard our ships have to present a valid passport or government-approved ID Card. Please keep your ID at hand when boarding. Boarding will be denied if a valid ID is not presented at check-in. This applies to all guests. Guests planning to extend their journey and visit Spitsbergen, Svalbard, are asked to take their passports with them.

EU nationals should obtain up-to-date advice on passport and visa requirements from the Embassy, High Commission or Consulate of your destination or country(ies) through which you are travelling.

We do not accept any responsibility if you cannot travel, or incur any other loss because you have not complied with any passport, visa, immigration requirements or health formalities. You agree to reimburse us in relation to any fines or other losses which we incur as a result of your failure to comply with any passport, visa, immigration requirements or health formalities.

Currently, there are strict restrictions for travellers arriving in Norway. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the rules and ensure that you follow the requirements from the Norwegian government. Rules for quarantining and entry to Norway might change at short notice, and depend on your nationality, vaccination status and your place of departure before travelling to Norway. We will not allow guests to embark the ship if you are in quarantine.

As we know many of our guests will be travelling out of Norway after the sailing, we will be providing you the service of an onboard COV19 antigen test (rapid test). The test including an electronic certificate will cost NOK 1100.  Tests can be booked on board the ship. The service is enabled throughout the whole stretch; Bergen-Kirkenes-Bergen.

We are pleased to inform you that we offer a selection of our normal activities and excursions. Due to our strict infection control measures, we will be operating with a limited selection of activities, and truly appreciate your understanding of this. The program will vary depending on national and local guidelines. Be advised that we are monitoring the situation closely, and the offerings and infection control measures on board might change at short notice before or during your voyage.

This form will be sent to you 24 hours before the ship's departure. If you are not able to fill in the digital form, you will be given a self-declaration form at check-in.

You can also use the below link to fill out your self-declaration form. To make sure all details are up to date, the form must not be completed any earlier than 24 hours before departure.

Practical information

We care deeply about your safety, health and wellbeing. This is as true now as it has always been ever since we first began sailing in 1893, perhaps even more so. We’ve introduced several new procedures throughout all our ships, designed to keep you safe:

You can read about the health and sanitary measures of our airline partners on their dedicated web pages.

There are more than 70 activities to bring you even closer to coastal Norway. Try a range of seasonal experiences both at sea and on shore with our optional excursions:

Not sure what to pack for your trip? We have drawn up a packing list for you, suitable for all seasons along the Norwegian coast.

At The Coastal Express, we are committed to sustainable travel and always seek to minimise the negative impact of our operations. Therefore, we also distribute our travel documents digitally. We are in close dialogue with our partners about this, but for now, the following services still require printed documents for travel:

  • Vy (Norway Rail)
  • Transfers in Bergen, Oslo, Kirkenes, Tromsø and Trondheim
  • Norway in a Nutshell excursion

For all other services booked with The Coastal Express, no printed confirmation is required. You will need to present a valid passport or official ID card only. You do not require vouchers as proof of purchase for any hotels, shore excursions or voyages you have booked with Hurtigruten.

If you have booked flights with us, you do not need paper tickets. Your boarding passes will be issued at the airport upon check-in. Please refer to the Arrivals-Departures Information guide for more information.

Please read all documents carefully and contact your travel agent, tour operator or The Coastal Express (if you have booked directly with us), if you have any queries. We look forward to welcoming you onboard the world’s most beautiful voyage!
